“Tell me something new,” Lyla whispers on the receiver. She’s lying on her back, staring at her red ceiling. Her heart is beating fast, like it always does when she’s on the phone with him.
He, on the other end, sighs. “Well,” he says. He pauses for a minute and Lyla, impatient as ever, clears her throat. “Today, we went to the park to take pictures. Mostly of each other, which would’ve been wonderful if my classmates weren’t so conceited. So..”
“So?”
He sighs. He doesn’t like it whenever she interrupts him. “So I approached the only one who wasn’t begging to have her photo taken. I’ve often noticed her.. Um,” His voice trails off, afraid to betray himself. “We walked away from where everyone was and found a nice place near the lake. She didn’t have to pose, really. I made her sit and I took a few shots. They all turned out pretty nice.”
Lyla, who has been staring at the ceiling all this time, sits up and hugs her knees. Her heart is beating faster than ever. She raises her hand to her breast to feel the beating, so so fast.
“Lyla?” he says. “Are you alright?”
She inhales a deep, deep breath. Her heart has gotten heavier since she first heard his voice on the other end of the line. “Yes,” she says with a tired smile. “I’m great.”
